Sandy Score
One number for how good a beach day looks
Every beach gets a live 0–100 Sandy Score — three equally weighted categories, so you can compare beaches at a glance right on the map.
Live Weather — Temperature, wind, surf, air and water quality — fetched live for each beach.
Confidence — How trustworthy a beach's dog-friendly status is, based on how many sources agree.
Popularity — How loved a beach is — saves, visits, star reviews and Google popularity.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a dog-friendly beach?
We only list a beach as dog-friendly when an official source says so — today that means the California Coastal Commission, with verbatim rules from CA State Parks where they apply. If a source is silent, we show the status as unknown rather than assuming dogs are welcome.
How do I know if my dog needs a leash?
Every beach shows its dog policy: off-leash, leashed, or allowed (leash detail unconfirmed), plus any seasonal rules like wildlife closures. Rules change, so always check posted signs when you arrive.
Which states does Sandy Pup cover?
California today, with every listing built from official state data. Washington, Texas, Florida, Maine, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Rhode Island are on the roadmap.
What is the Sandy Score?
A 0–100 rating of how good a beach day looks right now, combining live weather, how confident we are in the dog policy, and how loved the beach is. Every beach on the map shows its own live score.
Where does the data come from?
The California Coastal Commission supplies the beaches, photos, and dog policies, CA State Parks adds verbatim dog rules for state-park beaches, Google fills in hours, contact info, and ratings, and NOAA/NWS and Open-Meteo power live conditions.
Is Sandy Pup free?
Yes — the map, search, live conditions, and hazard alerts are free with no account. Signing in is only needed to save favorites, track visits, and leave reviews.
